Week of 3/23

Dear Parents,

Thank you to all of you for meeting with me the past two weeks for conferences. We have one trimester left together to prepare your children for first grade-- let's continue working as a team to make that happen.

We are back to a normal schedule now that conferences are over.  We will have centers again on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.  Please check the schedule on the website-- I have now updated the schedule on the website through the end of the year.  Let me know of any conflicts.  "Mrs. R.," our student teacher is back with us in a week, and she may be able to sub for helper parents here and there, so just let me know in advance.

We have a new consonant this week, Xx, and the Alphafriend is "Mr. X-Ray."  For this sound, we mostly focus on it as an ending sound, which sounds like "ks."  We will look at words like box, ox, mix, six, etc. to study the ending sound.  After introducing another vowel last week (Oo), we will be able to do even more blending and spelling on our own. Keep practicing! We also have a new sight word, the. Children should now know 25 of our 40 sight words. See the list of words on our webpage for more reinforcement, or go to http://www.spellingcity.com, click on "find a list," and enter my last name under teacher search. You will be able to see the full 40 word list, a 25 word kindergarten list, and the expanded 50 word list that includes more first grade words. Your children will be able to play word games on this website to become more familiar with these words.  I have now updated the list on our kindergarten website to organize the words in order of the 25 they need to know first, then the remaining 15, so that you know which ones to really reinforce.

The sharing this week is book share.  Please have your child bring in a favorite book from home and be prepared to tell the title of the book and a bit about what it is about.  Also, have a favorite page bookmarked.

We will begin a new math topic for the next two weeks on solid shapes, or 3-D shapes.  The shapes we cover in this topic are: sphere, cone, cube, cylinder.  Children should be able to correctly identify and name these shapes regardless of orientation.  They should also be able to describe them in terms of numbers of corners and vertices.  They should also be able to relate these shapes to real-world objects-- for example, a can is the shape of a cylinder and a ball is the shape of a sphere, etc.  To reinforce this concept, we will have "solid shape sharing" next week, where the children will bring in an object from home and tell which 3D shape it is, so start thinking about what item to bring next week.

On Friday, April 4th, we will have a favorite kindergarten event, "Spring Fling."  This is an afternoon of spring fun-- special art projects, face painting, outside fun, music, and festivity!  We cannot make this event happen without your help.  Spring Fling runs from 9:30 to 11:00 (morning) and 1:00 to 2:30 (afternoon).  Please email us and let us know if you can help on that day!

The afternoon class has a Wacky Wednesday this week.  Class runs from 10:00 to 1:20.  Also, if you haven't already, please let daycares know about the additional Wacky Wednesday on April 16th for the field trip.

Another plea again to please try and turn the Blue Bags in on Monday of each week.  As the year progresses, we are getting more late blue bags, and it makes it difficult to get them ready for the upcoming week.  Thank you so much for your help!
