I am looking forward to a fun and educational week with the president oral reports, Valentine's Day, and patriotic projects.
Homework
The president's report homework is due tomorrow, in the Blue Bags as always. Remember that you did not need to do a journal entry about your blue bag book this week since the children are already writing about the presidents. Our sharing this week will be to state the fact(s) about Lincoln, and the fact(s) about George Washington that your children wrote on the back of the timelines. They will share these facts on their sharing day. I would like them to have each sentence memorized, but I expect that a few may need some prompting. There will be no homework this Wednesday due to the upcoming vacation.
Valentine's Day:
We will celebrate Valentine's Day on Tuesday in class. Remember to only have your child sign the 20 valentines and leave the "to" box blank. This helps us save time during the distribution of valentines as it is less confusing for the children during the passing out process. Although this is not a formal party, we will be passing out valentines and having some valentine-themed activities.
Language Arts:
This week's word families will be ed/em. As part of our lessons on word families, we have been showing the children word family videos on YouTube by an educational company called Little Fox. The students have been enjoying these videos, and they are easy to find online if you'd like to provide additional reinforcement at home.
Our story this week is Abe Lincoln's Hat by Martha Brenner, along with other stories about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We will be focusing on adjectives this week, and thinking of a variety of adjectives to describe some different pictures.
Our sight word this week is are. Keep reinforcing the sight words at home to work toward greater reading fluency.
Math
We are continuing with Eureka Math Module 4. We are now focusing on word problems and number sentences. One concept in Eureka Math is getting children to understand that number sentences can be arranged in different orders and still be correct. For example, both 9=5 + 4 and 5 + 4=9 are correct.
Parent tips for helping your child with this unit can be found here. Please continue reinforcing the concept at home using apps on iPhones & iPads or logging into their ixl.com account.
Social Studies/Science:
We will be learning about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington all week. We have many biographies to share with the children about their lives, as well as some videos on Brainpopjr.com.
We continue with STEAM Fridays. This week, we have some fun experiments with candy conversation hearts in different liquids. Much of the focus in STEAM has been working and collaborating with groups. Children often have to design and build things as a team. We have had many discussions in class about the importance of teamwork and sharing the materials to produce one product.
This Week's Helpers & Activities:
Monday: Blue Bags returned (Ting), Centers (Marylu & Annie), Sharing
Tuesday: Centers (Claire K. & Minna), Sharing
Wednesday: Wacky Wednesday, Recess 101, Sharing
