It's exciting and a little sad at the same time, but we are heading
into our last week together. What an unprecedented year it's been. I'd like
to thank you for the fantastic support you've given me all year long. Educating your children this year definitely took a lot of teamwork, and I had a championship team on my side! Go Grasshoppers!
During the summer, we have several learning opportunities/suggestions for you to avoid the "summer slide":
- Reading: The most important thing your child can do is continue reading daily. Whether it's sharing a book as a family or reading to him/herself, it is so important to keep up a reading routine.
- Writing: Please have your children keep a summer journal, where they can write a few sentences about what they did each day. I also always encourage children to send me postcards or write to me over the summer about what they've been up to. I respond to every letter I receive! I will include my address in the bag of things they will bring home one day this week, most likely Thursday or Friday.
- Websites/apps: KidsA-Z, Lexia, Brainpop, and HappyNumbers will all continue to be available through most of the summer.
- Camps & Recreational Activities: Take advantage of all that is offered in our community. I know many local organizations such as YSI, The Tech Museum, Galileo Camps, and Los Gatos/Saratoga Recreation are offering in-person summer programs. Also, encourage your children to get away from screens and enjoy outside time!
Camp-Out
Our big event this week is our "Camp-Out" class party on Thursday the 3rd. Please send your "campers" in their Grasshopper t-shirts and clothes for exploring (sneakers, hats, sunglasses, etc.). We will be outside quite a bit, so please apply sunscreen before school so we don't have any campers getting sunburn. Please also send your child with a small blanket or child's sleeping bag and a stuffed animal for inside their tents. We will have "tents" under the tables, as well as a few pop-up tents. If you are sending in a pop-up tent, PLEASE label it! I already received one on Friday and I don't know who it is from because Mr. Tim brought it in. If it is yours, please let me know and I will label it. It would also be a good idea to label any other items you send in (sleeping bags, blankets, etc.) so that they don't get lost in the shuffle.
I will be serving S'mores to the children at the camp-out. They contain graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows. Please let me know if your child cannot eat any of those ingredients so that we can get an alternate treat for your child.
Yearbooks
On both Wednesday and Friday this week, we have some down-time in class. If your child ordered a school yearbook (or has something else for children to sign) and would like to bring it to class to get signatures, that is fine with me. PLEASE make sure you label your child's yearbook so that we don't have any mix-ups. Also, please send a pen(s) for your child to have others use while signing the yearbook. I do not suggest that your child brings his/her yearbook on Thursday, because there are already several other items being brought to school and I think that's too much to keep track of.
Friday Spirit Day
It was fun to see so many Grasshoppers participating in "Freaky Friday" last Friday! This Friday, it is Alta Vista Spirit day. If you have AV t-shirts, sweatshirts, masks, etc., Friday is the day to sport those! If you don't have any AV spiritwear, just wear blue & yellow.
