We have a busy upcoming week as it is the last week of centers until after Spring Break. It is also St. Patrick's Day week, so I am looking forward to seeing all those traps on Monday and beginning to have kids share them. Thank you for your help and encouragement with the traps! I hope that it was a fun family project-- I know that the kids certainly seemed excited to get building. Just to clarify again, for this week, trap sharing is our sharing theme, and I will do sharing over three days (Mon-Wed). About 8 kids will share their traps each day. Then, we will set the traps and see if anyone is successful on Thursday! We will get back to the regular sharing schedule next week.
Another event this week is the visit of a committee from the county on Wednesday. This committee is the final group determining if our school is eligible for a "Gold Ribbon Award" for outstanding educational programs and practices. We are excited to show off the best of our school, and we are certainly hoping to be honored with this award.
This week, we have another review week with letters. We are reviewing the letters t, k, and n. However, we do have a new vowel, Oo, for Ozzy Octopus. This means that we can now read and spell CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words with short a, short i, and short o. Please keep practicing with your children spelling and reading such words as pit, pat, pot, hit, hat, hot, lip, lap, lop, etc. We also have a new high frequency word: said. Our art and writing will center around the theme of St. Patrick's Day. My mom was born and raised in Ireland, so I can't help myself ;)
We will also complete a few more science experiments with paper before we take a break from science until centers continue after Spring Break. This week we will experiment with folding different types of paper, and also seeing what happens when we add water to the various papers.
We will have another Cornerstone lesson this Friday. Cornerstone covers social skills concepts, being a good citizen, standing up to bullying, etc. I believe this week we will be reviewing Two, which author Kathryn Otoshi presented to the children last Monday.
Our "Spring Fling" event is coming up on Thursday, March 31st. We will have special spring-themed centers for a fun send-off to Spring Break. We will have face painting, planting, spin art, painting garden stakes, and outdoor fun, to name a few. Thank you to Maha, Hiromi, Tanya, Camille (and her mother!) for volunteering to help with this event. If anyone else would like to help out, (or if I forgot someone) please email me.We can definitely use more help than usual for this event, especially with the face painting. The event will run from about 9:00 to 10:15.
Please remember to send in your child's Blue Bag tomorrow amidst all the excitement of bringing the leprechaun traps. It really makes it MUCH easier to get the bags ready again for Wednesday if they all come in on Monday.
