We had a very fun, "Seussical" week in celebration of Read Across America on March 2nd. The kids shared great Dr. Seuss books, fun other book titles, and did a few Dr. Seuss-themed projects. I hope you were all able to view your child's video about Thing 1 and Thing 2. If not, let me know, and I will try to help you view it. The QR codes with each of your child's videos are now attached to an art project in the classroom. So you can always come into the classroom and scan the QR code on your child's project.
We will be celebrating another author, Kathryn Otoshi, this Monday the 7th. We will hear Ms. Otoshi read her new book, Two, and there will be a discussion afterward. Centers are canceled on Monday due to this event, which is at 9:30. Also, I will not be in class on Monday due to a Technology Leader meeting at the district office.

The upcoming week is a review week in language arts. We will start to have many more of these, as we have now learned 19 of the 26 letter sounds. We will be reviewing Dd & Zz this week, as well as introducing sight words of and not.
We will continue with a math review also. We will continue to cover the concepts of addition, subtraction, and number sense. Overall, I am very impressed with how well the children are understanding these topics. Thank you so much for all the reinforcement you've been providing at home!
The kids continued to enjoy our science unit, "Wood & Paper," this past week. We checked the absorbency of different woods and sawdust and even made our own particleboard and plywood. We will continue with a few more exciting lessons before conferences start in two weeks.
This week's sharing is Song, Poem, or Nursery Rhyme. Children should be prepared to recite a short song or poem. If they are stuck for ideas, they can always sing a favorite Alphafriend song. Songs & poems in other languages are always welcome and enjoyed!
On Wednesday, children will be participating in a district writing assessment. It will be a non-fiction piece of writing (informational text). The student's journal writing has been getting better and better and I anticipate great results. I've been especially impressed with the facts they are giving in their Blue Bag journals after reading a non-fiction book. Thank you so much for your support with their writing. They have all come a long way. I will go over the results of this assessment at your child's conference. Parent-teacher conferences begin Tuesday the 22nd. There will be no centers the week of 3/21 or the week of 3/28 due to Mrs. Sheikh's and my conference schedule.
Also this Wednesday, your child will bring home a special homework assignment. We will be building leprechaun traps! Get creative and have fun-- traps are due next Monday the 14th, along with the Blue Bag journal (there will be no other homework this week). There will be more specific directions in the Blue Bag this week, but we do ask two things-- that the traps not contain any unwrapped food items (we've had trouble with ants in the past!) and that the traps are not overly large-- shoebox sized is perfect. We have to store traps from both the a.m. class & the p.m. class, and it gets tricky if we have huge traps. Plus, we're only catching tiny leprechauns :) It's exciting to see the children's creations, and they are so proud to share and talk about how their trap will work. On Monday thru Wednesday next week, they will have that opportunity. They will share their design with the class and tell us how it will hopefully catch a leprechaun! Then, we will all come in next Thursday (St. Patrick's Day) and see if we were successful!
Please note a new event below in the "upcoming events." On Friday, May 6th, we will be celebrating Mother's Day in class. There is a special presentation and some light refreshments are served. I would really love every mom to be there to be celebrated, so I give lots of notice on this event. Please mark your calendars for 5/6!
