We have two special events this week: The Great Kindness Challenge and 100 Day on Thursday. For The Great Kindness Challenge, our class will be keeping track of kind acts with a "kindness chain." Children can come in each morning and tell me about a kind act they did at home, and we will also celebrate kind acts done at school. When children tell me about a kind act, they will receive a loop for our kindness chain. They write their name on the loop, and we will add it to our classroom chain. We are hoping that by the end of the week, our chain gets all the way across the classroom! You can support children at home by reminding them to tell me about a kind act you saw them do and brainstorming ways that they can be kind & helpful, both at home and at school.
For 100 Day, we will celebrate 100 days of learning together with special 100-themed centers. We are excited for both these special events!
Language Arts
We will continue to read snow-themed stories, as well as stories celebrating the number 100 and 100 Day. We will introduce the sight word his. Please review the "High Frequency Word" tab on this website to learn which words we've introduced so far this year. We have two new digraphs this week: th & wh.
Math
We are wrapping up the addition component of Module 4: Number Pairs, Addition & Subtraction to 10. We will have addition centers on Tuesday, and then for the rest of the week, we will be focusing on counting and numbers to 100 as we celebrate 100 Day. This fits in perfectly with Module 5: Numbers 10-20; Count to 100 by ones & tens. Parent tips for this module can be found here.
Kimochis
Last week, your child learned about happiness and the Kimochis® kotowaza—or Japanese proverb—that accompanies this feeling: “Have a happy heart!” This means we can say and do kind things that fill hearts with happy feelings. Sharing makes everyone feel happy, but young children are just learning how to share. Children who are 3 to 4 years old are developing the skills of sharing. However, because they are still figuring how to get their own needs met, they will struggle to share with others and will need adult guidance. Children who are 4 to 5 years old are able to share more easily. There may be some minor arguments that occur over possessions, especially favorites. It is best to guide children through these conflicts. Sharing is an important pro-social skill. In one study, the ability to share appropriately predicted positive social behavior later in adolescence.
**Children should return library books by Tuesday, so they can check out a new book on Wednesday.

- 100 Day 1/27-- we celebrate the 100th day of school with some special activities.
- Snow Day 2/4: children will dress up in whatever snow gear they have-- hats, mittens, coats, scarves, etc. and we will have a fake snowball fight with the other K classes, as well as have snowy-themed centers.
